He wants revenge, but he wants her more…
James has always had one agenda: destroy his enemy, Peter Michaels. When Peter’s twenty-year-old daughter Wendy shows up in Jame’s bar, he sees his way in. Seduce the girl and use her for his revenge. It’s the perfect plan, until things in James’s organization begin to crumble. Suddenly, he has to find the traitor in his midst, and his plan for revenge gets murkier as James starts to see Wendy as more than just a pawn in his game.
Wendy has been cloistered away most of her life by her wealthy cold father, but a spontaneous night out with friends turns into an intense and addictive love affair with the dark and brooding James. As much as she knows James is dangerous, Wendy can’t seem to shake her desire for him. But as their relationship grows more heated and she learns more about the world he moves in, she finds herself unsure if she’s falling for the man know as James or the monster known as Hook.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Here we are again for another round of Tik Tok made me buy it. I was so excited for a Disney retelling. I think villains have the room to have better stories. Villains aren’t born a villain, they’re typicaly made. This is going to be a very CHAOTIC review, because while i desperately wanted to love it, I also left the book mad and wanted to throw it across the room.
I love these books with the dual point of views. I love seeing both characters thought process and the things they’re feeling but not telling the other character…until I don’t. There’s a saying “show, don’t tell” This book provided way more telling than showing.
I loved how there are little things from the story of Peter Pan that we know and love sprinkled throughout the story. The little nods to Peter’s shadow, Neverland, Jolly Roger etc. Then there were a few nods that were a little cheesy like Tinker Belle being named Tina Belle.
I loved the cover of the book. It’s literally what caught my eye on Tik Tok and when I was browsing in the store. I know……I judged the book by its cover. If only the inner pages met the beauty of the art. The book had such great premise. There was so much potential for this. Hook is one character that’s been done a few times and each time its slightly different. (I’m looking at you Killian Jones from Once Upon A Time) I also liked that the writing was pretty straight forward. It wasn’t hard to read or comprehend.
There was some extremely graphic scenes. and some kinks. I got a couple chapters in and had to text a friend who has this book on her TBR to warn her about these triggers. It’s not for everyone.
Now into my rant about what I didn’t like. *Please note, I am a picky reader!**
The book started alright, kind of decent pacing which I enjoyed and then I realized there was only a few chapters left and the ending was rushed. Finishing the plot from the beginning, THE REVENGE, felt extremely rushed and chaotic. What seems like a This bad guy wants revenge on this other bad guy for something in the past and uses his daughter to get to him turned into oh wait theres this new bad guy and this girl who Hook thought less of is suddenly a high player. CHAOS!!!
Hook and Wendy didn’t really have any great character development and the development Wendy showed made absolutely NO SENSE. There was absolutely no build up to their romance at all, first date hooked up right away, I like a little romance before the spice. And you’ll have to read the book to understand the annoyance of Familial ties.
For my final rant of the book, James is written to be the KING of the underground crime scene. He’s supposed to be the most feared. For someone who’s ran this world….He’s comletely oblivious to everything that was going on right under his nose, in his own bar. The way that I described the book to my gamer husband is imagine a game that has a decent plot line thru about 35% of the game, then new characters are introduced, one of the main characters flipped script and then the last 5% of the book is rushing to resolve the conflicts. frustrating. The two epilogues, one 2 year time jump and the other 10 years did absoluetly nothing for me in regards to the story.
What got me through this book is imagining Killian Jones from OUAT as James aka Hook
Athough the book irked me, I still read it…..and I did not Throw it. Just because it’s not for me doesn’t mean it’s not for you. The entire reimagining of Disney stories has been a hit or miss for me. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I don’t. You might like this one.
