One choice. One bite. Two fates rest in the balance.
After the harrowing events with the People of the Night, Luna and Sebastian deal with the aftermath of his decision. In a land full of vampires, finding happiness has never been more challenging.
Their troubles are far from over. When Queen Marguerite summons the pair back to Castle Sanguis to participate in a deadly tournament, nothing goes as it should. Luna and Sebastian make their way through the tournament, uncovering hidden motives behind the Queen’s request for their participation. The Queen’s gam is not just a competition, but a test of their loyalty to the crown.
As Luna and Sebastian navigate treacherous alliances, dangerous foes, and deadly threats, they must rely on their wits and lovee for each other to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
The cost of failure is death.
I immiediately started the next book (because it is the trilogy set, 3 in 1) after the cliff hanger from the first book. I was ready to see what Luna’s reaction was going to be. I mean, I have read and watched the Twilight series so I know how Bella reacted. I’ve watched The Vampire Diaries maybe one too many times and I know how Elena reacted to becoming a vampire, I know how Caroline reacted to becoming a vampire. This could have gone a couple different ways. To say her taking that long to decide if she wanted to be a vampire or not was annoying would be an understatement. She knew she was bound and tethered to Sebastian and knew her dying would harm him….yet she still couldn’t decide if she wanted to live….because what would her family think?
Now I do love how the series constantly picks up right after the last book so you’re not left wondering what happened in the time frame between books. But this was a little lackluster in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong its a great book for the YA audience. It’s a quick read. However, as a book lover in my 30’s there are always going to be a few things that ‘irk’ me.
For one….the repetiveness. How many times did Luna say “for research”? Can someone please go back and count??? Luna is constantly being described as smart, a scholer, but rarely does she act smart. Deductive reasoning could have gone a long way. The pacing just felt a little off to me. I can’t exactly put my fingers on it but it just felt off.
I loved that Sebastian was a good husband. He truly cared about Luna. With that being said, he went from being the badass Prince of Darkness to a moping husband….because Luna was suffering. I get it, the binding tethering was somewhat explained. He can feel what she’s going thru…but like dude, you’re supposed to be the most feared vampire in the land and yet you’re sad.
It wasn’t a bad book. I enjoyed the ride. If you’re into Vampires and romance and fantasy, you might enjoy it. I do warn, there are phrases that are repetitive….a lot. But if that kind of thing doesn’t bother you….give it a shot.
